Monet’s constant attention to the slightest change in light and colour reached its height in the Rouen Cathedral series of canvases. In February 1892 the artist went to Rouen and rented a room in the main street directly opposite the famous Gothic cathedral. He was obsessed by his new project. "I'm finished, I can’t carry on any more. I had a night full of nightmares: the cathedral overwhelmed me, it kept changing from blue to pink, then to yellow." The cathedral’s main facade was depicted at different times of the day, showing all the different nuances of lighting.
